Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner Review
I’ve had this scanner at work for at least 6 years. I haven’t had any problems except a few driver issues early on. All those issues were fixed with reloading drivers. It’s currently attached to an XP machine and works well.
For all of those who reviewed this a slow scanner, um it’s USB1, of course it’s slow.
For those who say it’s blurry, try messing with the settings, Put a small Unsharp Mask on it.
I liked it so much I bought a letter size for home. Unlike Epson, whom I used to love, the software actually gives you some control. Epson’s “advanced” scanner options have no real noticeable difference from the basic options.
The scanmaker s400 I have at home is as good quality as the large, and dramatically faster because it’s USB2.

I’ve been using my scanner almost daily for over 6 years. The light has never gone out. The machine has never failed me. It’s been a great investment. The quality isn’t perfect, but with Photoshop and a bit of skill you can make useable scans easily. (Use a SilverFast driver and you’ll get much better results.) You can’t expect it to look like a drum scan at this price point, after all. I agree with everyone that the cost of these oversized scanners is completely ridiculous and out of line, but until someone comes along with a viable alternative this unit is about the best you’re going to find. If mine breaks down I’ll definitely buy another one.
