Canon CanoScan FB620P Flatbed Scanner (Parallel) Review

Was somewhat more difficult to set up than I anticipated. I had a few problems configuring it with Windows 98. Once setup was complete, scanner is easy to use and a great space saver. High res scans are slow, but all scans are clear and colorful. I did not receive a rebate coupon with scanner and wasn’t able to find it on the website to print out. Requested copy of coupon by fax and still waiting to hear. This is a great scanner for beginners and light users, I highly recommend it!

To setup the CanoScan, we attached the parallel cable to our PC (USB is not supported), plugged in the AC adapter, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the setup wizard. (If you restart your computer before running the CanoScan’s setup wizard, you can cancel the Windows New Hardware Installation wizard that runs automatically.) When you’re following the setup wizard, make sure you indicate that you want to install the 620P, not the 320P whose drivers are also included on the same CD-ROM.

In our tests of the CanoScan, we first conducted preview scans of several documents and images just to get acquainted with the scanner. These preview scans and other low resolution scans (75 dpi) were fast and easy, but high-resolution scans were very slow, on the order of several minutes. Still, the images were sharp and clear, and the final scans were comparable to those of much more expensive scanners.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive, light-duty scanner that’s easy to setup and learn, the CanoScan makes a fine choice. –Mike Brown

This is a great beginner scanner on Windows 98 or older..does not work with XP…found out the hard way. Great for scanning & cropping photos for email.

I have a FB620P and it was a good unit…but wait. – –
Do not even think of buying this scanner if you are running XP or Win2k. It will not work on either operating system. There are no drivers available from Canon to upgrade from Win98 to 2K or XP.
I wont buy another Canon product because of this.

Great, if your favorite color is red – –
OK for black & white scans, but color scans are RED all over. Even the underside of the scanner cover, which is white, scans as red. Canon doesn’t have a toll-free number for tech support and doesn’t respond to emails. So don’t buy this one unless you really like red.
