D-Link DWL-G710 Wireless Range Extender, 802.11g, 54Mbps Review
The repeater/range extender works perfectly once set up. However, the instructions will never tell you how to set it up. You need to do an online web search for the product and how to install it in order to have any chance. You must assign a constant ip address to your computer before you start or else nothing will ever happen.
The only other problem I had is not the extender’s fault. We have a portable telephone system which blocks almost everything that runs on 2400. So I have an X10 switch on the phones so that when I want to use the extender, or my wireless video cameras, or whatever 2400 – I just turn off the telephone with the X10 switch. Purchased 2 DWL-2100AP’s to use as a bridge between 2 buildings with an unobstructed distance of about 750ft. I was expecting the usual 2-day setup headache to integrate these into the network, but to my surprise the 2100AP worked perfectly once the initial configuration was completed. Plugged in an old Linksys WAP54g to the far end of the bridge and created a greatly expanded network. Total setup time took less than 1 hour. I have not measured data transfer, but it seems very good. No problems with streaming video, etc.
The instructions for the 2100AP are a little sketchy, and D-link seems to interchange some technical terms that mean the same thing (adds color and confusion to their writing!). However, I did not find the instructions any worse than the several Linksys or Netgear Wireless Routers that …
