Lenovo IdeaPad S10 10.2-Inch Red Netbook – 3 Cell Battery Review

I bought this mostly for my 10 year old daughter, and for my occasional use. I wanted something small, and relatively inexpensive (compared to a regular laptop). We have had it about two weeks and I’m very pleased with it.
Pros
* The keyboard is smaller than a full size laptop but it still usable, even for my large hands. (extra large gloves are typically tight for me). I wouldn’t want to write a book with it, but for short periods of typing, such as blogging or e-maiing it works fine.
* The response time is good. Don’t expect it to be as fast as a high performance laptop or desktop, but the speed is certainly acceptable. (and I’m the impatient type).
* Although the Lenovo website says that face recognition software is not offered on this model, ours had it included. It works very well as long as the lighting is fairly good. You do not have to sign-in using the keyboard; just sit in front of the screen for a few seconds while it recognizes your face. It also takes a picture of anyone trying to access the laptop. If someone is trying to use it without your permission, you’ll be able to see who it was.
* It comes with a Lenovo front end that sits on top of windows. It offers you icons for the internet, online gaming, etc. You can exit it to go to the normal Windows desktop.
* It looks very sharp and is well designed. Ours is a deep red on the outside and white on the inside.
* Battery life has been very good. I don’t have exact number but you should be able to get a few hours of internet use out of a charge.
* It is very light and portable, yet seems sturdy.
Cons
* These small laptops are called Netbooks for a reason. If you intend to use it for internet surfing, email, etc… it does fine. This is not the computer you want if you plan to run software that requires computing power and memory. Needless to say… this is probably not what you want to run Photoshop.
* There is no built in CD or DVD drive.
You can read the Amazon description to see all of the specs and features, but it does come fairly well equipped for the price. For the last 15 years, all of my past computers were Dells, and I still like Dell. However this Lenovo model seemed to offer the most for the money.

Good unit but needs 6 cell battery – Pete – Denver, CO
the use for this unit is for my wife to email and access the internet. The home desk top PC frustrated her to use as it take about 10 minutes to bootup. (Needs updated soon—- after the release of MS Windows7)
I bought the Lenovo because of the style, specs and software installed.
the unit has the option to use face recognition to sign in. The wife likes that feature. the unit works great. We like the fact that the internet camera, speakers and microphone are built in. It makes it very simple for my wife to talk to me via Skype when I travel internationally.
We used it on our Alaskan cruise to store/backup all the pics we took. Worked great and it was nice to be able to review the pics on a screen larger then 2.5″. The small size and light weight were just what we were looking for.
I would recommend it higher if it had come with the 6 cell battery. The 3 cell battery it came with is good for about 1-1.5 hours.
good unit – Leif Wanager – Tacoma
I like it. I bought it for our cross-country drive. It picks up wi-fi in hotspots and it’s reasonably sturdy for its small size. It’s a good value. I don’t mind the small battery as I usually plug it in anyway. Good for downloading free KIM-KOMANDO website stuff. Plenty of room onboard.
Two small gripes … may be no big deal to you:
Gripe #1 = the right *shift* key is hard to find for a touch typist like myself … the designers had to make a layout choice and I’m still adjusting to it.
Gripe #2 = VERIFACE: This technology would be great if I was a secret agent, but I’m just me and don’t need all that security. Some people may really like it. It wasn’t difficult to remove and so it no longer hassles me. (It would be a big gripe if it was difficult to remove, but it’s not.)
I like this Lenovo S10. Some features of Windows XP drive me NUTS (like the magic auto hover-click — whether you want to click or not), but that’s not this netbook’s fault!
It loses one star only because of the right *shift* key size — of course if they had a large right *shift* key and small arrow keys I’d probably be complaining about that! If you “hunt-n-peck” it won’t bother you at all.
Good Netbook – Rebecca A. Baillie – Woodland, CA USA
I have had this netbook for four months. I bought it specifically to take on business trips when I was presenting slides or documents and I did not need to take my larger laptop. It is very good for travel and once I was used to the smaller keyboard, reasonable to type and use. I recommend a laptop mouse to use with the keyboard due to the smaller size.
-I would also recommend upgrading the ram if you are planning to use the netbook for work other than just email and the internet. I notice a slower speed when using multiple programs.
-I had a separate DVD/CD-Rom drive, so I could add programs without having to download them all. I found this very helpful.
-The power usage on this computer is run by a lenovo program rather than the standard windows power system. I have noticed that it does a very good job of conserving power and a decent battery life when using the default settings.
-This netbook generates a lot of heat and the bottom gets very warm. I do not recommend setting it directly on your lap to work. I have a cushioned cover but I still notice the heat generation.
-The wireless card in this netbook is not as good as the one in my laptop or any of the laptops that I have had. It has less range and must frequently reconnect. I notice this even with my wireless at home. Whereas my large laptop can maintain a stable wifi connection for hours, this netbook reconnects every 15-30 minutes, sometimes more often.
-This is a good solution for presentations, email, and other work where you are not doing detailed work. It handles word documents and general office programs well. It is decent for internet use once you get used to the smaller screen. There is no problem with the speed, just a smaller view and more scrolling than a regular laptop.
Overall this netbook has been a good choice. It does exactly what I wanted and at a minimal weight. I just wish that the wifi card was a little more stable.
Awesome netbook! – Jennifer Davanh – Chicago, IL
I had this netbook for over a month and I’m loving it! The screen is the perfect size and having only 1 GB of ram is actually not that bad (even though I’m planning on upgrading to 2 GB). The only problem I had with the netbook was that it stated that it has 160 GB of hard drive but I’m only seeing about 130 (unless there is 30 more hidden somewhere) or maybe it’s just my netbook. That’s why I only give it 4 stars. Overall, this is my number one baby. I’ve got so many compliments from my family. The webcam was a nice touch, the quality was a lot better than I expected. Even though it’s mainly designed for internet, email, and music usage, I actually play my sims 2 on this thing and it runs great. I recommend this netbook if anyone is thinking of getting one.
