Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (931376-0403) Review

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (931376-0403)
Before optical mice became a norm, I used to swear by the Logitech Wingman Gaming mouse. It had three buttons and the form factor was really good for long hours of playing. I actually owned two of them, because the first one I purchased had a fancy pattern cover over the mouse and over the years it had worn out and became a bit sticky without the pattern cover. I hesitated to replace the Wingman mouse, but the roller ball could not compare to the futuristic optical mice. The scroll wheel is OK, but I could live without it. The optical light was what killed the ball technology… no comparison. The optical light and then later laser light precision was obviously far and beyond superior than the ball.

I own two Wireless Microsoft Optical Mouse 2000. Cheap mouse.
I own the V470 BT Laser mouse for notebook. Laggy, doesn’t work well with my notebook’s built in BT.
I own the VX Nano mouse. TOO small form factor! Hurts using it for more than 20 minutes.
I also own the Logitech G3 mouse, very precise, but not a good form-factor… it’s too low up front, so your hands tire out after long usage. Not ideal for LAN party that will last over 8 hours straight.
I own the VX Revolution, PERFECT notebook mouse, for right-handers and I use it as my main notebook mouse every day!
I have the MX518 optical mouse for my desktop at work, great comfy mouse but it cannot compare to the G5 in precision.

Now for the main course meal… the G5 laser mouse (for my home desktop). I had to get used to the form-factor at first, a bit bigger than what I am used to using… but it did not take long. The teflon pads below plus the accuracy of the mouse makes this the ultimate mouse for years to come. I use this mouse when I attend LAN parties and using this mouse for 10 hours straight (minus breaks and eating) does not wear out my hands at all. The G5 has weights for you to add or remove and it does make a difference. My G5 is medium weight while a friend of mine likes it heavy.

One thing to note is that this mouse isn’t the type of mouse you would use for “picking up” during gaming. If you like to “pick up” your mouse during FPS gaming, then you will do better going for a “shorter” mouse such as the G3 (again, I can’t get used to the G3) or the G9 laser mouse… I do not have the G9 mouse as I feel like my G5 (I paid for it) is perfect, therefore, no need to spend 0 for a G9… which does look very nice to use. Maybe when the price of the G9 is lowered in the future….

The G5 isn’t really the “perfect” mouse, but it comes close to being one with how ergonomically it feels and solid build quality. There will be better mice *looking at the G9*, but for now the G5 satisfies me.

had this for 4 years still works great! – MeNaCeDoG –
it still works great after 4 years of me slamming it around getting pissed off at Counter Strike!

Best mouse I have ever used…and it is 2010 – Jeff Pruett – Denver, CO
Here it is 2010, and this ancient mouse is still the best one on the market in my opinion. Resolution and sensitivity is superb (this is a laser mouse, not just an optical mouse), and the weight system is simply awesome. It comes with many small weights you can use to make it heavier or lighter. Being able to control how heavy the mouse is doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal, but now that I have tried it I don’t think I could be happy with a normal mouse again. The pads on the bottom give it extremely smooth movement compared to other laser mice I have tried.

I love the tiny buttons below the wheel that let you vary sensitivity on the fly. I love that the wheel button (which functions well as a third button…most wheel buttons are too stiff) will also click left or right, allowing for horizontal scrolling without using scroll bars. While not a specialty gaming mouse, it works very well for games even though it only has four buttons. I still prefer this mouse for games even over game-specific mice like the Razor. Even though it is wired I find I barely notice it, because the braided cable feels weightless.

One minor thing…dust does accumulate on the laser sensor eventually. This will result in erratic and jerky movement. For the longest time I thought the movement was because of bad vista drivers. But simply using a wet Q-Tip to clean the sensor on the bottom completely fixed it like new.

I have bought many mice since this one, but even in 2010, there is nothing I have found that has improved on the Logitech G5. And that includes the wireless version (the G7) and other (newer) Locgitech mice. If you can still find this anywhere, buy it!

Best Mouse Ever!!! – Seth Roseman –
After getting and using this mouse, i can’t imagine going back to a regular mouse. The mouse has a sleek, finished look that is sure to fit into almost any decor. it has a small button on the side that will bring you pack a page in a web browser. it has at to center a stylish black scroll wheel and on ether side of that, left and right mouse buttons. Below the scroll wheal there is a small plus and minus button that controls the 3 mouse speeds. This mouse it the perfect gift for anyone with a computer. Highly Recommended!!!!

Not worth the cost of packaging – A. Brown – Corvallis, OR USA
This mouse is the jerkiest I’ve ever used. It is just not possible to actually reach any particular place on the screen because the mouse jumps 10 or more pixels in random directions. I will never buy another logitech mouse.
