This thing was very difficult to use as a Mac User. I spent about 5 hours doing research online trying to figure out how to get the .MOD files onto my computer so I could edit them with Final Cut Pro.

The .MOD files are not recognized by Final Cut Pro.

I tried two different things that worked.

1) I paid for ISkysoft Video Converter. This converts the .mod files into almost any other format, including .mov files, which I used in Final Cut. It worked OK for the standard frame size, but I couldn’t get it to work for the files that I shot in the widescreen format. The Video converter would squish it or distort it, and it never looked right.

2) iMovie 08 – I tried to open the .mod files that I had put in a folder on my desktop with iMovie and it didn’t work. So I figured it wasn’t compatible.

Then I did a little more research and found out that iMovie will import your .mod files if iMovie is already running, and you import files directly from your camera, as opposed to your hard drive. It may import files from a card reader, but I don’t own a card reader, so can’t answer that question.

Detailed instructions (not in the manual!)
A) Open iMovie.
B) Plug in your FS200 to the AC outlet.
C) Turn on the camera.
D) put the camera in “Play” mode
E) Select “PC/Printer”
At that point, iMovie discovers your camera, and asks you what files to import.

If you work in iMovie, then you are all set. iMovie turns it into a .mov file.

I just figured out that I can open this iMovie clip in the finder, and then drag it into Final Cut for editing, without exporting and compressing an additional time.

The widescreen clip dimensions are 720 X 480. In Sequence Settings(Final Cut), I hit the Anamorphic 16:9 check box, and it looked right.

In case you haven’t already figured it out, this camera works with a Mac, but it’s kind of complicated!

Don’t forget to add – for a memory card, since there is not internal memory in this camera.

Even though it’s a bit of a pain, I still think this camera is a decent one for the price.
