Back-to-Basics Smoothie Elite Maker Review

My old smoothie maker finally gave out (our family of 8 was using it 3-6 days a week), then the smoothies stopped coming out smooth with chunks. FINALLY, after 3 1/2 years, I found the SMOOTHIE ELITE at Goodwill for .00. That seemed high for a thrift store, but I could see, though it needed to be cleaned up, it looked quite new, and they can run at least . So I made a peanutbutter chocolate smoothie with vanilla yougurt and it was WAY quieter than my old one, that I believe has caused me hearing loss over the years. And oh, was it smooth. My old one left my creamy peanutbutter still not completely mixed throughout. What a nice machine. Cleans better than my old one, and I love the idea of the stiring stick. My old one you would have to stop and shake it or stir it with a knife to get to the bottom. I really got a good deal and even if you paid full price, you really did too!

Back-to-Basics Smoothie Elite Maker Overview
Smoothie Elite is the original smoothie machine. Powerful motor and smoothie-specific features let you make the best smoothies possible. Works far better than ordinary blenders.
Back-to-Basics Smoothie Elite Maker Specifications
Designed just for the purpose of blending fast, nutritious smoothies, the Smoothie Elite does the job better than an ordinary blender and is easy to operate. The 56-ounce jar has measuring marks for adding just enough fruit, yogurt, and protein powder (or whatever you prefer in your smoothie) for either two or four servings. Running at 500 watts, the pulse-power motor blends at three different speeds–mix, smooth, and pulse–letting you control the consistency of your drink. The jar’s shape pulls ingredients down to the center blade, ensuring that even larger foods mix evenly. Additionally, a unique stir stick in the center of the Smoothie Elite’s jar breaks up air pockets during blending for more efficient mixing. This smoothie maker even has a special heavy-duty ice-crushing blade, so frozen drinks are blended into a consistent texture. A dispenser valve on the front of the unit eliminates spills so you can continuously mix and serve without a mess. This machine is an inexpensive alternative to ordering daily smoothies at a juice bar. It is covered by a one-year limited warranty and comes with instructions and a recipe book. –Cristina Vaamonde

Awesome for the price – SaddySpot – Locust Grove, Georgia
We have used this smoothie machine for 2-3 years now. Originally, it was just for weekly margarita or other frozen drinks, but for the last 1+ year, we have used it to make smoothies about 5X /week. It does a great job. Sometimes there are ice chunks if we don’t run it long enough or the spout gets clogged if it’s too thick, but we wouldn’t be able to drink it through a straw if it were that thick anyway. we just add some milk or oj and no problem. It’s starting to have problems now, it occasionally has a burning smell and is very loud. So I have been planning to buy a replacement and have been looking. After extensive shopping, I will buy the same one again. If I have to replace it in a couple more years again, I’m okay with another then. The others I have looked at have been much more expensive. I can’t believe it has gotten such poor reviews.
It mostly works… – B. Keppler –
I’ve used this blender for making smoothies for about a year now. It originally belonged to a friend who gave it to me becuase they were no longer using it. I’ll start with the problems, which are numerous. It is very cheaply made. First the handle broke off. Then the spigot broke. The spigot was useless anyway and always clogged if your smoothie is even remotely thick. Worst problem is that the bottom of the canister will actually come unscrewed while it is running. Then when you pick up the canister to pour it into your glass, your smoothie dumps out the bottom all over the table and floor. I’ve done it three times now and it always results in a big mess to clean up. Now I actually pick up the entire blender to pour the smoothie into my glass. It’s a pain, but it works. The good news is that it really does blend quite well. I can put in some yogurt, frozen stawberries, an apple (cut into pieces), grapes, kiwi, banana, and numerous ice cubes and it will blend it into a nice smooth consistency. I really want a Blendtec, but I just can’t justify spending so much money. This works and is cheap if you can put up with all of the problems.
Smoothie Elite-the spigot is the hook. – Richard K. Stiverson – Denver, Colorado
I have owned two Smoothie Elites. Unfortunately believing the first one was a “lemon”, regrettably, I purchased a second. This blender is a piece of junk. The teaser to draw potential customers is the spigot. Don’t be fooled. The most important aspect of any blender, whether it is for food processing, smoothies or drinks, is how well it blends. This blender is unable to reduce ice particles to a size below that of medium find sand. A frozen margarita the consistency of desert gravel leaves something to be desired. The spigot function is useless unless the blend is more liquidy than smoothie. Keep the liquids handy as you will assuredly be reblending to get a consistency that can actually flow through the spigot. Unfortunately, liquidity that allows fluids to flow through the spigot easily is liquidity that will also leak out of the spigot, so always put another glass or towel under the spigot to catch the incessant drips. Lastly, be wary of the bottom gasket. It does need to be disassembled for cleaning (or it will grow mold). However, it is an imperfect seal. The more times you unscrew the bottom for cleaning the greater the risk of leaks. Back-to-Basics is to be commended for trying to create a blender that pours through a spigot. Unfortunately, they gave no consideration to the quality of the blending or the leakage problems. Bad gift to yourself. Bad gift to someone else.
