Crimson Tide [Blu-ray] Review

Crimson Tide [Blu-ray]
Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman head a nice cast in this tense submarine adventure in which the two stars wind up on a collision course with the prospect of nuclear war hanging in the balance. Their sub receives a garbled and incomplete order to launch nuclear missles with the crew taking sides for commander Hackman and executive officer Washington, which results in mutiny. Cat-and-mouse manuevers with a Russian sub, several tense moments among the USS Alabama’s crew and highly-charged animosity between Hackman and Washington make this film a rewarding experience. Jason Robards has a brief cameo role at the end of the movie.

Crimson Tide [Blu-ray] Specifications

You can almost hear the studio pitch meeting echoing throughout Crimson Tide like the sonar on the soundtrack: “It’s The Cain Mutiny on a nuclear submarine!” When radio communications problems aboard the USS Alabama prevent the sub from receiving its orders clearly during a tense confrontation with Russian warships, Navy officer Denzel Washington faces a huge ethical dilemma: countermand the orders of legendary Captain Ramsey (Gene Hackman) to fire nuclear missiles, or follow his command and risk launching an unprovoked nuclear war. It’s really an actors’ picture, and the fun is in the fireworks between Washington and Hackman, each of whose characters articulates solid reasoning behind his decision. There are no easy villains, and there’s no easy way to tell right from wrong–that’s what makes the nuclear stakes so terrifying. Director Tony Scott (who directed Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance script) called in Tarantino to punch up the dialogue, which is why, for example, the sailors talk about Silver Surfer comic books. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen; the sonorous underwater rumblings on the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack will provide you with a good opportunity to show off your system’s bass response. –Jim Emerson

Good movie. – william bissell –
Without a doubt this is the best submarine movie ever made. The only one that equals it is “The Enemy Below” with Robert Mitchem.
I enjoy watching “Crimson Tide” over and over and love it. Gene Hackman is at his best without exception and Denzel almost equals his performance in “Pelican Brief”.
This movie will be a classic.

A great Blu-ray transfer – J. Simpson – North Carolina
I’ve been upgrading my DVD collection to BD over the last two years, and it’s always a gamble if the blu-ray disk will be of the exceptional quality I’ve come to expect. Rest assured, Crimson Tide looks awesome in 1080, a big upgrade from the standard DVD. I’m not a huge sound junky, just using my TV’s stereo speakers with no surround so I can’t vouch for sound quality, but it was fine for my standards. So, don’t worry about quality on this one, it’s all there. The disk also has the extras from the DVD too, not just the film.

Ruined by politically correct racism – Mark Wilsonwood – Grapevine, TX
Consider these two movie scenes from “Crimson Tide”:
(1) The arrogant, abrasive, cigar-chewing, middle-aged black captain of a nuclear sub strikes his young, handsome, family-man, white Executive Officer (XO), slugging him in the fact twice, viciously, and demanding he surrender his missile launch key. The white XO stands his ground, stoically accepting the blows. The movie audience is invited to reflect on the anger and bigotry of the black captain, and on the nobility and courage of the white XO.
(2) The black captain tells the white XO a story about the Lippizaner stallions, noting that they are “all black”. The white XO responds that they’re all black only when born; when they grow up, they’re “all white”. The movie audience cheers at the white man putting down the black man with his clever riposte.
Haha! I jest. These scenes could of course never be in a Hollywood movie, as they are blatantly racist. But substitute “black” for “white”, and vice versa, in my description of the scenes, and sure enough both scenes ARE in the movie.
This politically correct racist nonsense, combined with so many mutinies and counter-mutinies that I lost count, ruined what could have been a decent thriller.
