James Bond Blu-ray Collection Six-Pack (Dr. No / Die Another Day / Live and Let Die / For Your Eyes Only / From Russia with Love / Thunderball) (Amazon.com Exclusive) [Blu-ray] Review
I too had a problem playing the bond blu-ray discs on my blu-ray player (I own the Samsung BD-P1500). I rented From Russia With Love from netflix; I too was skeptical as to how much better the blu-rays would look compared with the Ultimate Edition dvds (all I which I had previously purchased). The initial problem was that the player kept getting stuck on the main menu; no matter what you would select, it would always take you right back to it. However, after downloading and loading a firmware update, the disc played perfectly. And I am happy to report that I was more than impressed with the quality. I thought the Ultimate …
Collateral Damage [Blu-ray] Review
Yes, another typical Arnold Schwarnegger film which translates to (a) interesting all the way; (b) very violent; (c) very far-fetched. Here, Arnold is just a plain old fireman but he turns into superhero, doing things only Superman or Batman could accomplish….but it’s still fun to watch.
After seeing his wife and kid blown up by Columbian terrorists, Arnold goes after the latter, traveling to the jungles of that South American country and taking them on! In the end, he’s in Washington trying to diffuse another terrorist plot. He’s amazing. What CAN’T this guy do? Yes, it’s ludicrous….but it’s not meant to be taken seriously, folks! It’s just entertainment for fans of action movies, nothing more.
There is a nice twist at the end of this story and it involves a very intriguing-looking woman, Francesco Neri. I just love that woman’s face. She’s also in “Hannibal” but I think the …
Vertical Limit [Blu-ray] Review
When I saw this shortly after it came out on VHS (and later, this DVD), it got high marks just for the spectacular sound alone. It had some of the best rear-speaker sound I had ever heard. It was a showpiece for surround-sound systems at the time.
The movie is interesting with it’s main fault being a common one: overdone action at the end. Along the way, however, it has many almost jaw-dropping scenes and some spectacular mountain scenery which still looks great on the sharp DVD transfer. I”m holding off on the Blu-Ray, due to mixed reviews here on the audio and visuals.
The stunt work in here is also incredible. Martin Campbell, the same director who did “The Mask Of Zorro” and “Goldeneye,” is good at producing eye-popping action scenes.
How accurate is it concerning mountain-climbing? Not much, according to a few mountain- climbing experts …
Seven Years in Tibet [Blu-ray] Review
Brad Pitt stars in this movie taking place during the childhood of the Dalai Lama, during the wild troubles of World War II. Heinrich (Pitt) is an Austrian mountain climber who cares only for the latest climb, leaving behind his pregnant wife. He ends up being captured by the British in India (just for being there) and sent off to a POW camp. He and a fellow climber are able to barely escape and make their way into Tibet, where they end up with the young Dalai Lama.
Much like Kundun, the story mixes visions of the boy Dalai Lama looking down at the world with his telescope, the growing influence of the Chinese, and the beauty of the Tibetan culture. Heinrich boasts about his exploits and mountain summitting, while the local Tibetan calmly points out that in Tibet people aim more towards being content and …
